Highways England is the new government owned company responsible for driving forward our motorways and major A roads. This includes; modernising and maintaining the highways, running the network and keeping traffic moving. Over recent years, investment in our highways has increased. This has led to advances in technology, such as smart motorways; enabling traffic to flow better. However, even more is yet to be done.

Job Description

The role

We currently have an opportunity for a permanent Assistant Regional Safety Co-ordinator to join Highways England in the Birmingham offices. The successful candidate will be responsible for the development and implementation of the Safe System enabling Highways England to take an active role in incident and casualty reduction for the region.

Day to day

  • Work closely with stakeholders both internally and externally
  • Coordinate the development of a Regional Calendar of stakeholder meetings and road safety events, initiatives, and campaigns
  • Develop and maintain a management information system to support the planning, monitoring and evaluation of Regional Road Safety activities
  • Be the service delivery focal point for national strategy releases, including KPI delivery progress reviews, H&S campaigns and delivery plan updates  
  • Support service providers in organising the Regional Road Safety Forums
  • Monitor road user incidents and road user fatalities, contribute to incident debriefs and receive Safety Tour Site Reports

About you

  • Experience of working in a project environment with an ability to manage conflicting demands and deliver to time, quality and budget ideally within an infrastructure environment
  • Experience of working successfully with senior officials within internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to use MS Office software, including Excel Intermediate level, Word and MS
  • Ability to use analytical skills to provide quality analysis and progress reporting to Regional safety co-ordinator and senior management
  • Capable of engaging professional, technical and other partners to maximise delivery, experience of building and maintain relationships
  • Experience of information management
