Job Description

The Role

Highways England is looking for a Senior Structures Advisor to join the Policy Team within the Structures Technical & Engineering Groups based from any of our major offices on a permanent basis. This is a great opportunity to develop your career within structures engineering, working with industry leading experts who are dedicated to quality, safety and making a meaningful contribution to the public.

The SES directorate supports our operational delivery by developing standards and providing specialist technical services and advice to the wider business. As part of this directorate, the Structures Technical & Engineering Groups take the lead on setting the policy for the development and management of highway structures and are responsible for the technical governance of structural assets, contributing to Highways England best practice on design, construction, management and maintenance.

Day to Day

  • Provide sound technical advice, using developing knowledge of structures policy to act as subject matter expert.
  • Create standards and guidance, consistently evaluating and tracking how they are employed to further develop innovation in the use of new materials, processes and resources.
  • Identify and manage structures research and consultancy tasks to deliver business improvements and contribute to the development of policy and standards.
  • Liaise with the wider construction industry, standards bodies and academia to establish, develop and review structural innovations in materials, processes and standards.

About you:

To be successful in this role you will need to have;

  • Chartered or Incorporated Civil/ Structural Engineer - with broad experience in highway structural design, assessment, maintenance & construction.
  • Experience of working collaboratively to develop innovation in new materials, processes and materials
  • A good understanding of the applicable areas within the DMRB
